Sinks and cabinets

I've been obsessing on how to remodel the sink and the cabinets in my bathroom. Currently, I'm in love with the whole concept of sink bowls on top of the cabinets. I was checking prices online and it left me open- mouthed when I saw the actual prices for one of these!

Briscoe Sink Cabinet

Although these reach the $500 tag, they
include everything from the faucet to the cabinet.  In my perspective they were a bit too expensive, plus, they aren't big enough to fill in a big bathroom.

I like the color and finish, plus the high end look they have.

The best part is that you can save all that money and make it yourself! You only need time and the right materials to make this sort of vanity by yourself!

Here is how:

1. Decide whether you want to keep your cabinet. (Ask yourself these questions: Can i paint over my    cabinet? Is it cheaper to buy a new one?) Unless your cabinet is completely destroyed, you can definitely use it to remake it into a beautiful piece that will have all your friends jealous when they see your bathroom.

2. Choose the style of cabinet you want. (I only have 3 here but you can use any type you would like)

3. Find a sink bowl. To do this, you can go in the internet and search inexpensive sink bowls that are within your budget. http://www.vintagetub.com has many styles but they begin at $100.
If you feel like you cannot spend that much, get a regular ceramic or glass bowl from your
kitchen, or the internet. Be sure to know the proportions (I recommend a large
bowl).  I found this one on Amazon.com for $20.
Ask for professional help to cut the hole and insert a
Flange (ask your local framer for this).
This won't cost too much ($20-$30). If you want to
do this yourself, check out this link:
                                                  http://www.ehow.com/how_7972094_install-bathroom-sink-flange.html
Right there, you are saving at least $50  instead of buying one from a professional store.

4. Now, you have to think of the counter that the bowl will be sitting on.  If you are unsure on what you would like to buy, check out this website : http://www.hgtv.com/bathrooms/guide-to-selecting-bathroom-countertops/index.html. Wood is one of the cheapest you can buy. Go to Home Depot, buy plywood, The thicker the better. Stain the color you'd like or paint it a pretty color (you can be bold about the colors here).
Just remember to cover the wood with a heavy coat of urethane to prevent from water damage.

Wood Bathroom Countertops

If you do not want any of those because they are a bit too much for your budget, You might think of new ideas to put as your sink counter. The possibilities are endless. But remember, whatever you use, you need a hole in the counter so that it can be easily placed with the bowl.

5. Buy the right Faucet. I was checking prices online and found some okay prices for faucets. Remember, if you have a sink bowl, you will need a faucet that reaches over the bowl they start at $30 in home depot and Lowe's.
Take these for example:

6. Prep your cabinet. This requires painting your cabinet any color you want, sanding, and adding a high gloss coat (bathrooms are the places to put high gloss finishes). If you keep your cabinet, paint it a color that will go with the palette of your bathroom. I recommend white since it never goes out of style.
If you don't want to keep your old cabinet, go to the thrift store or the internet and search
for end tables. I found this one online for $25.

Amish Catalina End Table | Amish Furniture | Shipshewana Furniture Co.
Just attach them all together with Wood glue and nails (for the wood counter top and the cabinet).

I hope I helped you make your first step towards your dream bathroom!

So you feel your bathroom is outdated & old, and you're still hearing in the news that the economy isn't getting better anytime soon. What to do about it?

Simple... Change the walls!

If you like your bathroom layout keep it. Sometimes the only thing you need to actually change is the wall color.

There are many colors that coordinate well together.

Here are some examples:

Cool gray walls or tiled walls with white accent furniture (such as cabinets)

Nautical blue walls with terra-cottage orange accents and white furniture

White furniture, green walls, and brown accents

The peach palette shows a variety of peach colors that will look amazing with bronze.
If you have white furniture, paint the walls a nice bronze and add peach accents or vice versa.
Either way your bathroom will look amazing with these colors.

*Accents are the accessories (i.e. rugs, towels, hand towels, etc)
